Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Minecraft’s original creator, Markus "Notch" Persson welcomes 2025 with a bang, announcing that Minecraft 2 might just be on the way. Read on to find out more about his plans!

Minecraft 2 Announcement

Notch Is Open To Making Its Spiritual Successor

Minecraft’s original creator pretty much confirmed that Minecraft 2 might be coming sooner than later, as he said on his X (Twitter) account.

On January 1st, at 1:25PM EST / 10:25 PST, Minecraft’s creator Markus "Notch" Persson posted a poll on his X (Twitter) account, sharing that he is currently working on a game that is set to be a cross between a traditional roguelike like ADOM, and a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler like Eye of the Beholder. However, he added that he was also very open to making a "spiritual successor thing to Minecraft," saying that he’d be happy to oblige either.

Fortunately for fans, it’s no surprise that the Minecraft 2 option is winning by a landslide, taking 81.5% of the total 287k votes as of writing. The original Minecraft game was—and still is—a blockbuster hit with at least 45 to 50 million players logging in daily from all over the world.

In a follow up post, he confirmed that he was "100% serious about all that" and that he "basically announced Minecraft 2." Notch figured that players would actually want him to make another Minecraft-esque game, and that he’s loving working on his passion again. "I don't super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know I'm making one, so I figured I'd absolutely be willing to give it an honest shot in the form of a spiritual successor to minecraft and put up a poll about it," he continued.

However, the current version of Minecraft, the IP, and its developer Mojang were sold to Microsoft back in 2014. Hence, Notch is legally not allowed to use anything related to the IP unless he works directly with Microsoft. Nevertheless, he assured that if he would be focusing on the Minecraft spiritual successor, he intends to do so in a way that will not "sneakily infringe on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing and that Microsoft is successfully doing the microsoft shittification about" because he respects them for doing that—as their job. Mojang seems to be leading on with the creative liberties as well, with Microsoft letting the studio do what they do best.

Notch also expressed his own worries about working on either the roguelike title or the Minecraft 2.0, saying that spiritual successors don’t always go the way they were projected to be. "The things I’m fearing my next game is going to be anyway and try to push myself to avoid. So why not do the thing that people do want and are willing to give me, somehow, even more cash for."

While waiting on the Minecraft "sequel" of sorts from the original developer, fans can look forward to the Minecraft-themed amusement park attractions that are set to come to the UK and the U.S. in 2026 and 2027. A live-action movie—amply called A Minecraft Movie—is also set for release later this 2025.
