Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, has recently taken to social media to offer fans a sneak peek at the upcoming guest character T-1000 Terminator's Fatality, while also hinting at "future DLC." This tease has sparked excitement and speculation among the game's community.
To celebrate the launch of guest character Conan the Barbarian, Boon announced via Twitter that Mortal Kombat 1 has now surpassed five million copies sold, an increase from the previously reported four million. Alongside this announcement, Boon shared a short video showcasing one of the T-1000's Fatalities, which is sure to delight fans of Terminator 2. The clip features the T-1000 driving a battered truck into his opponent, reminiscent of the iconic chase scene from the movie where the T-1000 pursues Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator and Edward Furlong’s John Connor.
Boon's accompanying comment, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!" has fueled speculation about additional downloadable content (DLC) beyond the current set. The T-1000 Terminator marks the final character addition in the Khaos Reigns expansion, following Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. As fans eagerly await more details, many are curious if NetherRealm will introduce a Kombat Pack 3, especially given Mortal Kombat 1's strong sales performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery, Mortal Kombat's parent company, has expressed continued faith in the franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav highlighted the company's intention to focus on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat among them. Meanwhile, Boon has reassured fans of long-term support for Mortal Kombat 1, despite revealing in September that NetherRealm had already chosen its next project three years ago.
While many speculate that NetherRealm might return to the Injustice series, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The Injustice franchise, which began with "Injustice: Gods Among Us" in 2013 followed by "Injustice 2" in 2017, has been on a hiatus since the release of "Mortal Kombat 11" in 2019 and the subsequent soft reboot, "Mortal Kombat 1," in 2023.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon discussed the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game instead of alternating with Injustice. He cited the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a new version of the Unreal game engine as significant factors. "Mortal Kombat 11" utilized Unreal Engine 3, whereas "Mortal Kombat 1" runs on Unreal Engine 4. Boon emphasized the team's commitment to safety during the pandemic and their desire to explore new technological capabilities.
When asked directly about the future of the Injustice franchise, Boon firmly stated, "Not at all," indicating that the door remains open for more Injustice games.
