Netflix Celebrates Record Subscriber Growth with Price Hike
Netflix achieved a record-breaking quarter, surpassing 300 million paid subscribers for the first time. This milestone, however, comes with a price increase across most plans in the U.S., Canada, Portugal, and Argentina.
In its 2024 full-year earnings report, Netflix announced 302 million paid subscribers, a remarkable addition of 19 million in Q4 alone and a record 41 million for the entire year. While this marks the last quarter of reported subscriber growth figures (the company plans to announce future membership milestones), the financial success is coupled with another price adjustment.
This price hike, slightly more than a year after the last increase in 2023, follows a pattern of annual price adjustments dating back to 2014. Netflix justifies the increase by citing continued investment in programming and a commitment to delivering increased value to subscribers. The shareholder letter states that these price adjustments are necessary for reinvestment and further improvements to the service. Specific price increases weren't detailed in the letter, but reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg suggest the following:
Ad-supported plan: $6.99 to $7.99 per month
Standard ad-free plan: $15.49 to $17.99 per month
Premium plan: $22.99 to $24.99 per month
A noteworthy addition is a new "extra member with ads" plan. This allows users on the ad-supported plan to add an additional household member for a fee, a feature previously restricted to standard and premium plans.
Netflix's Q4 revenue saw a 16% year-over-year increase, reaching $10.2 billion, with annual revenue also up 16% to $39 billion. The company projects 12% to 14% year-over-year revenue growth in 2025.
