Nintendo Tips New 3D Mario Game for Switch 2

Nintendo is hinting at a new 3D Mario game that could be announced soon, though we'll have to wait for an official reveal.
During a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser responded to calls for another major Mario installment. While he didn't confirm a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey is in development, he suggested that fans won't have to wait long for news.
Stay tuned.“
"Stay tuned," Bowser stated. "We have an extensive catalog and a wide range of intellectual properties that will eventually come to the platform."
Although Bowser's remarks don't confirm an imminent 3D Mario announcement, they offer some reassurance to fans surprised by its absence from the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo introduced its next-generation hybrid console earlier this month, it highlighted several major titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World – but a traditional 3D Mario platformer was noticeably missing.
The last flagship Mario game launched in October 2017, just months after the original Switch debuted. This means nearly eight years have passed since the last major Mario release. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza may help bridge the gap, they aren't the Super Mario Odyssey sequel many expected. Still, given Mario's importance in Nintendo's extensive IP catalog, it would be more surprising if a new 3D Mario game doesn't appear in the near future.
For now, a new mainline Mario adventure remains unannounced. While waiting for updates, you can check Nintendo's updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here before the console launches on June 5, 2025.
