The possibility of an Overwatch mobile version has long been considered a distant dream, particularly following Jason Schreier's revealing book on Blizzard, which indicated that such a project had been shelved. However, a fresh agreement between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard might just revive these hopes.
The primary focus of this deal centers on securing the publishing and development rights for a new installment in the revered StarCraft RTS franchise. The competition was intense, with companies like Krafton and Netmarble reportedly vying for the opportunity. If confirmed, Nexon will be steering the future direction of the StarCraft series.
Yet, the most intriguing aspect of the deal involves the reported inclusion of publishing rights for an Overwatch mobile version. This development not only suggests that the mobile project is far from dead but also hints at the possibility of an official sequel in the form of a MOBA.
Overwatch's foray into the MOBA genre wouldn't be unprecedented, given Blizzard's previous push with Heroes of the Storm. There's a chance that the proposed Overwatch MOBA could be a mobile version of Heroes of the Storm. Alternatively, a spin-off release is equally plausible. However, the notion of an 'Overwatch 3' can be confidently dismissed, as such a move would represent a significant shift for the franchise, traditionally focused on console and PC platforms.
Embracing the MOBA format could prove advantageous for Overwatch, especially with emerging competitors like Marvel Rivals potentially overshadowing it. It may be time for Blizzard and their publishing partners to take bold steps to revitalize this once-thriving franchise.
