New Patent Reveals Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features

The Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be a familiar yet innovative evolution of its predecessor, with significant enhancements to the Joy-Con controllers as revealed through recent patents. While Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these changes, multiple reports suggest that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will feature magnetic attachments and the ability to function like a computer mouse.
According to a patent filed by Nintendo, the new Joy-Cons will be "detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." This suggests a seamless integration and detachment process. The patent further explains that two buttons on the top surface of the Joy-Con's protrusion must be pressed to detach it from the Switch 2. These buttons are attracted to the magnets, ensuring a secure connection until the user decides to separate them.
The innovative mouse-like functionality is also detailed in the patent, showing illustrations of players using the Joy-Cons as a mouse. With the controller held railside down, the R1 and R2 buttons serve as the left and right mouse buttons, respectively. There might even be a scrolling function incorporated into the joysticks, adding a new dimension to gameplay and user interaction.

The patent illustrations also demonstrate various configurations, including using the Joy-Cons in a dual mouse setup or pairing one as a mouse with the other as a traditional game controller. This versatility could revolutionize how players interact with their games.
Early leaks about the magnetic attachments were among the first rumors to surface about the Switch 2, followed by the mouse-like feature, which has yet to be officially confirmed. However, a teaser released in January subtly showcased the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface, hinting at this new functionality.
