Pokémon GO Retires Support for Outdated Devices

Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Devices in 2025

A pair of upcoming updates will render Pokemon GO unplayable on certain older mobile devices, specifically 32-bit Android phones. This change, announced January 9th, will take effect in two phases: March 2025 (affecting some Samsung Galaxy Store downloads) and June 2025 (affecting 32-bit Android devices from Google Play).

Players using affected devices are urged to safeguard their login credentials before the updates arrive. While they can continue playing on newer devices after upgrading, access will be temporarily unavailable until the upgrade is complete. This includes access to any purchased Pokecoins.

While inconvenient for some, the impact is limited to older models. The developers assure that 64-bit Android devices and all iPhones will remain compatible. A partial list of affected devices includes:

Affected Devices:

  • Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
  • Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
  • Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
  • LG Fortune, Tribute
  • OnePlus One
  • HTC One (M8)
  • ZTE Overture 3
  • Various Android devices released before 2015

This news comes as the Pokemon franchise gears up for a potentially significant year. While Pokemon GO's future updates remain unclear, the upcoming release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A and rumored releases of Pokemon Black and White remakes and a new Let's Go title promise an exciting year for Pokemon fans. A potential Pokemon Presents showcase on February 27th may shed more light on future plans for Pokemon GO.
