Niantic has revealed exciting details about the Pokemon GO Lunar New Year 2025 event, which will kick off on January 29, offering players numerous opportunities to catch Lucky Pokemon, Shiny Pokemon, and other enticing rewards. Much like the current Fashion Week event, players can engage in Lunar New Year-themed Field Research tasks to earn additional bonuses.
As Pokemon GO celebrates its ninth anniversary in 2025, the game is set to receive a series of new events and updates leading up to summer and the much-anticipated Pokemon GO Fest. Among these is the Pokemon GO Tour: Unova, scheduled for Los Angeles and New Taipei City from February 21 to 23, with a global event following in March. Prior to the Unova event, players can expand their collections during the Lunar New Year.
The Pokemon GO Lunar New Year 2025 event will run from Wednesday, January 29, at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, February 2, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. local time. Niantic has announced that players will enjoy an increased chance of obtaining Lucky Pokemon through trades during the event, as well as a higher likelihood of becoming Lucky Friends, which further boosts the odds of getting Lucky Pokemon. While exploring, players will encounter Ekans, Onix, Snivy, Darumaka, Dunsparce, Gyarados, and Dratini more frequently, with a greater chance of encountering their Shiny variants. Additionally, 2 km Eggs will hatch into Makuhita, Nosepass, Meditite, Duskull, and Skorupi during the event.
Lunar New Year-themed Field Research and Timed Research tasks will be available alongside Routes, offering Stardust, XP, and encounters with event-themed Pokemon. Players can also collect Zygarde Cells by participating in Routes during the event. For those looking to maximize their rewards, the event-exclusive Paid Timed Research for $2 grants two Lucky Eggs, an incubator, and encounters with Ekans and Nosepass. All rewards from Field Research and Timed Research must be claimed by February 2 at 8:00 p.m. local time, so players should claim their rewards promptly after completing tasks.
Participants can also enter their Lunar New Year Pokemon into Pokemon GO's PokeStop Showcases to earn additional rewards based on their performance, including item bundles. Niantic has confirmed the availability of an event-themed Collection Challenge, which, upon completion, will reward players with extra Stardust for trading. This makes the Lunar New Year event particularly beneficial for frequent traders.
