Ahead of the major October Prime Day sales launching next week, Best Buy is already running a promotion on the most powerful SteamOS-based gaming handheld. The Lenovo Legion Go S, featuring an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, is now priced at $779.99, down from its usual $830. As one of the top new handheld gaming PCs of 2025, it's also the only officially supported SteamOS device not manufactured by Valve. Since Amazon doesn't stock this item directly (excluding potentially unreliable third-party sellers), it's unlikely Best Buy will reduce the price further next week.

In her review of the Legion Go S Steam OS version, Jackie determined that it stands as "one of the best handheld gaming PCs available." We are specifically referring to the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme model, which is noticeably more powerful than the Ryzen Z2 Go, even though the Z2 Go is a newer generation chip. It also comes with 32GB of RAM, surpassing the 24GB in the Asus ROG Ally X (and the upcoming Xbox Ally X) and the 16GB in the Steam Deck.
The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme delivers significantly better performance than the AMD APU inside the Steam Deck. This extra power, combined with the increased memory, ensures games run smoothly on the Legion Go S's larger and superior 8-inch 1920x1200 120Hz display. While the Legion Go S does not feature an OLED screen, the higher resolution and faster refresh rate on its high-quality IPS panel arguably provide a better experience than OLED's benefits. Battery life is roughly comparable, though the Legion Go S supports a much higher maximum charging speed.

For an additional $220, the Asus Xbox ROG Ally gaming handheld can now be preordered for $999.99. The most significant upgrade over the current ROG Ally X is the new AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip. Early benchmark results are encouraging, showing genuine frame rate improvements, particularly at lower power settings. However, the Xbox ROG Ally operates solely on Windows, and there is no news yet of a SteamOS-based handheld using the Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip.
