Mastering Vehicle Hotwiring in Project Zomboid: A Comprehensive Guide
Project Zomboid's vast map encourages vehicle use, but finding keys isn't always easy. Fortunately, hotwiring offers a solution. This guide details the process and skill requirements. While not requiring a top-tier build, certain prerequisites must be met.
Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid
Successfully hotwiring a car allows you to drive it as long as it has fuel and is in good working order, even without the keys. However, you'll need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Vehicle
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle's radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
Once the prerequisites are met, these steps work on any operable vehicle. The hotwiring is automated; after completion, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.
Leveling Up Electrical and Mechanical Skills
For non-Burglars, skill progression requires specific in-game actions:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts. Check mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves while looting. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP. Appropriate tools (like screwdrivers) are necessary for dismantling and installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" to remove them.
