Investigations revealed that the firearm, intended to be a "cold gun" without live ammunition, malfunctioned due to improper handling. Following the tragedy, charges were dropped against Baldwin in April 2023, while armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed faced legal consequences and received an 18-month prison sentence. First assistant director David Halls admitted guilt to a misdemeanor charge and was placed on probation.

Despite these challenges, *Rust* made its debut at Poland's Camerimage Film Festival in November 2024. During the screening, the film paid tribute to Hutchins in the credits.
