Hazelight Games announced that their latest co-op adventure, Split Fiction, has achieved remarkable success, selling 2 million copies within just one week of its release. Launched on March 6, the game is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, and has quickly become another triumph for the studio. Hazelight expressed their gratitude on social media, stating they are "blown away" by the overwhelming support from both new and returning fans.
The game's initial sales surge was impressive, with 1 million copies sold in the first 48 hours following its launch. This means an additional million copies were snapped up in the subsequent five days, showcasing the game's strong appeal. The dual-protagonist narrative, featuring characters Mio and Zoe in a sci-fi setting, has clearly resonated with players.
As a cooperative game, Split Fiction likely engages far more players than the number of units sold, thanks to its innovative Friend’s Pass feature. This allows one player to buy the game and invite a friend to play for free, significantly increasing the game's reach and impact. With continued buzz on social media, the sales figures are expected to climb even higher.
Hazelight's previous title, 2021 Game of the Year winner It Takes Two, also enjoyed a successful launch, selling about 1 million copies shortly after its debut in March 2021. The game's popularity soared over time, reaching 10 million copies by February 2023 and an impressive 20 million by October 2024.
In IGN's review of Split Fiction, the game was praised as “an expertly crafted co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another,” highlighting its dynamic and engaging gameplay experience.
