Meta Quest 3S: Amazon's 2024 Best-Selling Console

In a surprising upset, the Meta Quest 3S outperformed established gaming giants Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch to claim the top spot as Amazon's best-selling console of 2024. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering its October launch.

The Quest 3S's budget-friendly price point, coupled with its standalone functionality (no need for a powerful PC or console), and a compelling game library, proved a winning combination. While VR remains niche, the Quest 3S's accessibility clearly resonated with consumers.

Amazon's 2024 best-seller list reveals the Quest 3S's dominance in the video game category, securing the #11 overall spot. This is impressive, especially given the list's dominance by gift cards and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. The PlayStation 5 Slim (#17) and Nintendo Switch (#53) trailed significantly. Remarkably, Xbox consoles didn't even feature in the top 80, although some peripherals did. The PlayStation 5 Pro was also absent. Only a Nintendo microSDXC card (#8) and the PlayStation DualSense controller (#9) outsold the Quest 3S.

VR Accessibility Takes Center Stage

Sony's PlayStation VR2 notably failed to appear on the Amazon list. While boasting a strong game selection, the PSVR2's tethered design and reliance on a PlayStation console likely hindered its appeal compared to the untethered and standalone Quest 3S.

Interestingly, the discontinued Meta Quest 2 ranked #27, while the original Meta Quest 3 didn't make the top 80. This suggests a strong preference for lower-priced VR options.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 slated for a 2025 release, the coming year promises a fascinating rematch. Nintendo's potential to replicate the original Switch's success could significantly alter the landscape. However, 2024's results strongly suggest a growing, albeit gradual, interest in virtual reality gaming.
