Transformers: Reactivate Officially Cancelled by Splash Damage

After a prolonged and challenging development cycle, Splash Damage has announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated title, Transformers: Reactivate. This news follows a cryptic trailer reveal at The Game Awards 2022, generating excitement among fans for a 1-4 player online game featuring Autobots and Decepticons uniting against a new alien threat. The studio, known for its contributions to multiplayer aspects of games like Gears 5 and Batman: Arkham Origins, had piqued interest in its take on the beloved Transformers franchise.

However, subsequent years yielded little concrete information about Transformers: Reactivate, aside from leaks and early toy releases hinting at a Generation 1 roster (Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, Soundwave, with Optimus Prime and Bumblebee rumored) and even potential Beast Wars inclusions. These possibilities now remain unrealized.

Splash Damage's official statement on Twitter acknowledged the difficult decision to cancel the project, citing potential staff redundancies as the studio shifts focus. The company expressed gratitude to its development team and Hasbro for their support. Fan reaction has been varied, with some expressing disappointment, while others anticipated the cancellation due to the prolonged silence following the initial trailer.

The studio's transition to "Project Astrid," a AAA open-world survival game built using Unreal Engine 5, announced in March 2023 in collaboration with streamers Shroud and Sacriel, is now expected to receive the resources previously allocated to Transformers: Reactivate. Unfortunately, this shift will result in layoffs. The cancellation leaves Transformers fans still awaiting a high-quality, AAA game featuring the iconic Robots in Disguise.

Key Points:

  • Transformers: Reactivate cancelled.
  • Potential layoffs at Splash Damage.
  • Studio focusing on open-world survival game, "Project Astrid," using Unreal Engine 5.
