Valorant's New Anti-Cheat Measures: Ranked Rollbacks to Combat Cheaters

Valorant is escalating its fight against cheaters with the introduction of ranked rollbacks. This new system will reverse the rank or progress of players whose matches were compromised by hackers. The goal is to deter cheating and ensure fair gameplay for all Valorant players. Importantly, players who were on the same team as a cheater will retain their rank rating, preventing unfair penalties for those unwittingly partnered with hackers.

The recent surge in cheating activity prompted Riot Games to announce these stricter measures. Phillip Koskinas, Riot's head of anti-cheat, publicly acknowledged the problem and outlined the new strategy on Twitter, emphasizing Riot's enhanced ability to combat cheating. He shared data illustrating the significant number of cheaters banned by Vanguard, Riot's robust anti-cheat system, in January alone, highlighting a peak on January 13th.

Ranked Rollbacks: How They Work

The implementation of ranked rollbacks directly addresses concerns raised by players. One player questioned the fairness of winning a match with a cheater on their team, highlighting the impact on both opposing teams and those unintentionally teamed with hackers. Koskinas clarified that while the enemy team will have their rank rating restored, players teamed with cheaters will keep theirs. Although this approach might lead to some rank inflation, Riot believes it's the best way forward.

Valorant's Vanguard system, utilizing kernel-level security, has consistently proven effective in detecting and banning cheaters. Its success has even inspired similar anti-cheat implementations in other popular games, such as Call of Duty. Despite past successes in reducing cheating, the persistent nature of the problem necessitates ongoing adaptation and stronger countermeasures.

Riot's commitment to tackling this issue is evident in the thousands of players already banned. The effectiveness of the new ranked rollback system remains to be seen, but it represents a significant step in Riot's ongoing battle to maintain a fair and enjoyable competitive environment in Valorant.
