Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse into the Future
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the footage offers a compelling preview of the game's visual direction and gameplay style.
The last major Virtua Fighter release, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (a remaster), launched in 2021. While not actual gameplay, the new footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, provides a glimpse into the game's in-engine visuals. The meticulously choreographed combat sequences, more reminiscent of a film than a typical fighting game recording, hint at a polished and refined experience. This resurgence of Virtua Fighter could solidify the 2020s as a golden age for fighting games.
Evolving Visuals: A Blend of Realism and Style
The showcased video demonstrates a departure from the franchise's classic hyper-stylized polygonal aesthetic. The new Virtua Fighter embraces a more realistic visual style, drawing comparisons to both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The footage features Akira, the series' iconic character, in two new outfits, a significant departure from his traditional look.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio at the Helm
Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the acclaimed Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development on this new Virtua Fighter title, alongside their work on Project Century. This experienced team promises a fresh and innovative take on the franchise.
A Novel Entry, A Renewed Commitment
Details remain scarce, but the new Virtua Fighter is confirmed to be a completely original entry in the series. Despite the limited information, Sega's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter brand is evident, as highlighted by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's enthusiastic declaration: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The company's continued release of teasers keeps anticipation high for this long-awaited sequel.
