Zack Snyder: Rebel Moon Shoot Was "Exhausting"

Dec 12,2025 Author: Brooklyn

Zack Snyder has announced he's stepping away from Rebel Moon temporarily to focus on other ventures.

The Star Wars-inspired sci-fi film Rebel Moon debuted on Netflix in December 2023 with significant anticipation. It unfolds in a galaxy dominated by the imperial Motherworld, whose military force, the Imperium, endangers a peaceful community on the moon Veldt. As the title suggests, a group of rebels rises to challenge this oppression.

Although Netflix had great expectations for Rebel Moon, it received largely negative reviews from critics. IGN's assessment scored it 4/10, stating: "Zack Snyder's space opera suffers from an unoriginal, cobbled-together script, unremarkable action scenes, and a shallow narrative."

A sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, arrived in April 2024 and was met with similar criticism. IGN's review also gave it 4/10, noting: "The second installment of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon saga, The Scargiver, presents a rushed ending to a familiar plot, supported by weak character development and uninspired action sequences." Later in 2024, R-rated director's cuts for both Rebel Moon films were released and garnered a more favorable response.

“I got pulled into another project — not exactly sidetracked, these are good problems to have — for Netflix, I'm developing an LAPD SWAT film,” Snyder mentioned in a recent Variety interview. “So I thought, I'll let the Rebel Moon universe simmer for a bit while I work on this.”

The Man of Steel director and writer, widely recognized for his contributions to the now-rebooted DC Universe, also pointed out the challenges of managing two major productions at once.

“Honestly, shooting both movies back-to-back was an intensely draining and lengthy endeavor. Taking some time away from it has been refreshing,” he shared. “I’m deeply passionate about Rebel Moon, but a pause is welcome. We’ll reassess where things stand once I wrap up this current project.”

Regarding future stories or potential film adaptations in the Rebel Moon series, Snyder remained mostly reserved. “The universe is rich with endless narrative possibilities,” he commented. “However, I’m waiting to determine the best direction—and whether we’ll proceed at all.”

Nevertheless, it’s evident Snyder believes Rebel Moon’s potential is boundless — especially with the recent announcement of a video game spinoff, Blood Line, set in the same universe.
