"The Last of Us Part 2 PC Port Needs PSN Account"

Summary

  • The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will require a PlayStation Network (PSN) account when it launches on PC, causing some frustration among potential players.
  • The PC release is scheduled for April 3, 2025.

When The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered arrives on PC later this year, players will need a PlayStation Network account to enjoy the game. This requirement has sparked controversy, similar to what Sony experienced with other PC ports of its once-exclusive titles. While bringing fan-favorite games like The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered to Steam is exciting, the mandatory PSN account has left some players feeling less enthusiastic.

The original The Last of Us, remastered as The Last of Us Part 1, has been available on PC since 2022. Sony is building on that success by releasing The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PC on April 3, 2025. This move is significant because the award-winning sequel was previously exclusive to PlayStation users, and the remaster required a PS5. However, the necessity of a PSN account might dampen some of the excitement.

The game's official Steam page now includes a note about the PSN account requirement, stating that players must link their existing PSN accounts to their Steam profiles. This detail can be easily overlooked but has proven contentious in the past. Fans have expressed dissatisfaction with similar requirements for other PlayStation games on PC, leading to significant backlash. For instance, Sony removed the PSN requirement from Helldivers 2 last year following strong opposition from the community.

Sony Is Still Trying to Get More PC Players to Create a PSN Account

Requiring a PSN account for PC ports can be justified in certain situations. For example, the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima requires a PSN profile for multiplayer and to use the PlayStation overlay. However, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is a single-player game, making the PSN requirement seem unnecessary for network features or cross-play. It appears to be a strategy to encourage PC gamers without a PlayStation to start using Sony's services, a business move that has faced criticism in the past.

Creating or linking a PSN account is free, but it can be an inconvenience for players eager to jump into the game. Additionally, the PlayStation Network is not available in all countries, potentially making the PC port inaccessible to some fans. Given the importance of accessibility in The Last of Us series, such restrictions could be particularly frustrating for players.
