Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
Larian Studios' highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has unleashed a tidal wave of community-created mods. The response has been phenomenal, with an astounding number of downloads in a remarkably short time.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke himself tweeted about the success, stating that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of the patch's September 5th release. This figure was quickly eclipsed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke aptly remarked.
This surge in mod activity is largely due to Patch 7's inclusion of Larian's official Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies the process of browsing, installing, and managing mods, enhancing accessibility for players.
Patch 7 also introduced substantial new content, including new evil endings, improved split-screen functionality, and numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements. The modding tools, available separately via Steam, empower creators to craft custom narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language, including custom script loading and basic debugging.
Beyond the official tools, a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) has emerged, providing a full level editor and reactivating previously restricted features within Larian's editor. While Larian has previously expressed reservations about providing unrestricted access to all development tools, the community's ingenuity is undeniable.
Looking ahead, Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, aiming for PC compatibility first, followed by console support. This ambitious undertaking presents challenges, requiring careful consideration for console submission processes and potential issues.
The overwhelming success of Baldur's Gate 3's modding community, fueled by Patch 7, signals a bright future for the game and its continued evolution through community contributions. Future updates from Larian are expected to bring further details on cross-platform modding and other exciting developments.
