"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"

May 15,2025 Author: Carter

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a modern update with the upcoming release of Breakout Beyond, nearly 50 years after its original debut. This fresh take on Atari's classic brick-breaker game introduces a novel twist: the gameplay progresses sideways. Developed by Choice Provisions, the creative minds behind the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond maintains the traditional paddle-and-ball mechanics but shifts the action from a vertical to a horizontal plane.

In Breakout Beyond, players will navigate through a left-to-right progression path, with the core objective remaining the same: break the bricks. As players build up combos, the game becomes a dazzling spectacle of lights and effects, enhancing the overall experience. The game introduces special bricks that trigger spectacular effects, from massive explosions to activating an actual laser cannon, adding layers of excitement and strategy to the gameplay.

Breakout Beyond will feature 72 meticulously designed levels, offering players a substantial challenge. For those looking for endless fun, there's an unlockable endless mode, complete with an online global leaderboard to showcase the highest scores. Additionally, the game supports local two-player co-op, allowing friends to join in on the brick-breaking action.

Originally slated to be an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took an unexpected turn when Atari acquired the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's Senior Director of Games Publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, initially announced in 2018 with a planned 2020 release, has faced numerous setbacks and delays. Despite these challenges, Atari stepped in last year to acquire the branding and rights to Intellivision, but not the Amico console itself.

Fans of Breakout can look forward to experiencing Breakout Beyond later this year. The game will be available on a variety of platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS, ensuring that players across different gaming systems can enjoy this innovative take on a classic.
