Baldur's Gate 3 Sees Player Spike After Patch 8 as Larian Eyes New Project

Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced a notable surge in Steam players following the release of the eagerly awaited Patch 8, positioning developer Larian to shift attention to its upcoming major title.
The transformative Patch 8, rolled out last week, introduced 12 new subclasses to Baldur’s Gate 3. Its launch drove a wave of returning players eager to explore the new subclasses and the freshly added photo mode.
On Steam, Baldur’s Gate 3 reached a concurrent player peak of 169,267 over the weekend—a remarkable achievement for a single-player-focused RPG in its second year. Player data for PlayStation and Xbox remains unavailable from Sony and Microsoft.
Commenting on Patch 8’s impact, Larian CEO Swen Vincke shared on X that he anticipates Baldur’s Gate 3 will “perform strongly for some time,” fueled not only by the player boost from Patch 8 but also by robust mod support.
This success allows Larian “space to concentrate on crafting our next major project to the highest standard,” Vincke added. “We have high expectations to meet.”
“I’m optimistic about BG3’s current state,” Vincke noted. “Patch 8 brought back a lot of players. It demanded significant development effort, but I’m glad we delivered.”
“With thriving mod support, I believe the game will continue to thrive for a while. This gives us the freedom to focus on making our next project exceptional, and that focus is invaluable. We have big ambitions to fulfill.”
Patch 8 marks the final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3, closing a remarkable chapter for Larian. The game launched to widespread critical praise and significant commercial success in 2023, maintaining strong sales through 2024 and into 2025.
Larian stunned the gaming community by announcing its departure from Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons to pursue a new game, which it hinted at before entering a media blackout to concentrate on the undisclosed project.
Hasbro, the owner of D&D, has hinted at plans to continue the Baldur’s Gate series. In an interview with IGN at the Game Developers Conference, Hasbro’s SVP of digital games, Dan Ayoub, revealed that with Larian stepping away, “many are eager to work on Baldur’s Gate.”
“We’re shaping our future plans and what we’ll do next,” Ayoub said. “We’ll have some exciting updates to share soon.”
Ayoub remained tight-lipped on whether these plans involve a full-fledged Baldur’s Gate sequel or a crossover akin to the prior Magic: The Gathering collaboration. He did, however, express a desire for a Baldur’s Gate 4, noting that its development would take time.
“It’s a challenging position to be in,” he admitted. “We’re not rushing. We’ll take a deliberate approach… We have numerous ideas and directions to explore. We’re beginning to test the waters and discuss a few possibilities. Soon, as I mentioned, we’ll have more to reveal.”
