Hironobu Sakaguchi, the legendary creator of Final Fantasy, once contemplated retirement but is now planning a new game that could become the spiritual successor to Final Fantasy 6. Discover the latest updates on this highly anticipated project and its development progress.

Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension (2021), Hironobu Sakaguchi aims to develop a new game inspired by Final Fantasy 6's legacy. In his interview with The Verge, Sakaguchi admitted, "I originally intended Fantasian to be my swan song." Yet the veteran developer now seeks to craft what he describes as "a worthy successor to Final Fantasy VI."
The creative spark reignited through collaboration. "Working with Fantasian's talented team was incredibly rewarding," Sakaguchi revealed, explaining why he postponed retirement. This experience convinced him to reunite the same team for a fresh endeavor—one that blends nostalgic elements with innovative approaches. "Think of it as the second chapter of my farewell," he added.

Sakaguchi provided development updates during his 2024 Famitsu interview: "The script has been complete for a year now. With current progress, we expect to reach a significant milestone within two years." Speculation arose in June 2024 when Mistwalker trademarked "FANTASIAN DARK AGE," fueling rumors of a potential sequel.
While maintaining his signature fantasy RPG style, Sakaguchi remains tight-lipped about specific details. No official title or release information has been disclosed for this upcoming project.

The December 2024 multiplatform release of Fantasian Neo Dimension marked Sakaguchi's reunion with Square Enix. Originally an Apple Arcade exclusive (2021), the enhanced version arrived on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch to critical acclaim. "Returning to Square Enix—where my journey began—to complete what I believed would be my final work felt profoundly meaningful," Sakaguchi reflected.
Sakaguchi joined Square (now Square Enix) in 1983, directing the first five Final Fantasy titles before producing entries VI through XI. After departing in 2003, he established Mistwalker, creating acclaimed titles like Blue Dragon and The Last Story. The 2021 Fantasian and its 2024 Neo Dimension edition represent his most recent works.
Despite this collaboration, Sakaguchi confirms he has no plans to revisit the Final Fantasy series or his earlier creations. "My perspective has shifted—I'm enjoying these worlds as a fan now, not their creator," he concluded.
