The DCU film "The Authority" appears to be facing challenges after DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed the project has been temporarily deprioritized.
Announced two years ago as part of Gunn and Peter Safran's "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" DC Universe reboot, The Authority features the notoriously violent superhero team from WildStorm comics. While initially touted as a major cinematic event, the adaptation has encountered unexpected hurdles in development.
During a DC Studios presentation attended by IGN, Gunn acknowledged The Authority as the most challenging project in their announced slate, citing Amazon's successful "The Boys" adaptation as a complicating factor.
"The Authority has proved the most difficult, both due to evolving storylines and the challenge of distinguishing it in a post-Boys landscape," Gunn explained. "With existing characters we've committed to and want to develop further, we've decided to focus on other priorities for now."

One Authority member will debut in Superman's DCU relaunch - technological genius Angela Spica, aka The Engineer. As the team's most formidable member with abilities including technopathy and self-replication, her inclusion suggests future Authority connections. Development challenges extend beyond The Authority. While Gunn confirmed setbacks for the Peacemaker spinoff "Waller," projects like "Booster Gold" and "Paradise Lost" are progressing well, with the latter's pilot currently in development.
Regarding "Swamp Thing," Safran indicated the studio will accommodate director James Mangold's schedule while he completes other projects. "We're committed to his vision and willing to wait," Safran stated, referencing Mangold's upcoming Star Wars film.
"Swamp Thing exists outside our core narrative," Gunn clarified. "Its inclusion stemmed from Mangold's personal passion for the property rather than broader continuity requirements."
