Become Aran de Lir, a blacksmith and warrior whose life takes a tragic turn, thrusting him into a quest for vengeance. He discovers a magical hammer, granting him access to the Forge of the Gods, where he'll craft unique weapons to combat Queen Nereia's formidable army. Prepare for a 60-70 hour adventure.
Journey through a breathtaking yet brutal fantasy world teeming with magical creatures—enchanted forests and blooming fields are home to trolls and elementals. The game's distinct visual style, reminiscent of Blizzard's work, features exaggerated proportions: massive limbs, thick walls, and a monumental environment creating a sense of epic grandeur. Encounter unique enemy types, including stocky soldiers reminiscent of Gears of War's Locust.
Blades of Fire boasts an unparalleled weapon modification system and a revolutionary combat mechanic, setting it apart from typical action games:
Forge your weapons by selecting a base template, then customize its size, shape, material, and other parameters impacting its characteristics. A mini-game concludes the process, requiring precise control of your strikes to determine the weapon's quality and durability. Conveniently, previously forged weapons can be instantly recreated. The developers encourage emotional attachment to your creations, incentivizing their continued use. Weapons are left at death locations but can be retrieved. Carry up to four weapon types, switching seamlessly, each with unique stances for slashing and thrusting. Forget looting—you craft every weapon. Seven weapon types await, from halberds to dual axes.
Combat utilizes directional attacks targeting the face, torso, left, or right. Exploit enemy weaknesses—attack the body if they guard their face. Certain bosses, like trolls, have additional health bars vulnerable only after limb severance. Sever an arm holding a club, or destroy a boss's face to temporarily blind them. Stamina, crucial for attacks and dodges, doesn't regenerate automatically; hold the block button to recover it.
Reviewers acknowledge potential shortcomings: limited content, uneven difficulty, and a sometimes unintuitive forging mechanic. However, the unique setting and combat system effectively mitigate these flaws.
Blades of Fire launches May 22, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Epic Games Store).
