Final Fantasy Tactics Creator on Fighting Division and Inequality

Yasumi Matsuno, the creator and director of Final Fantasy Tactics, has shared insights into the game's origins, explaining he crafted its narrative to bring light to an era "robbed of hope."

With the long-rumored Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally receiving a release date for later this year, Matsuno shared a heartfelt message on X/Twitter. He stated he "offers this story once again," seemingly speaking to the deep social unrest and division that characterizes 2025 as well.

"Nearly three decades ago, the collapse of Japan's bubble economy buried financial institutions under mountains of bad debt," he wrote. "This triggered a wave of corporate bankruptcies, a sharp spike in unemployment, and widespread societal stagnation. It was an era where hope was scarce and dreams were commodified.

"Against this backdrop, I created a story," he continued. "It was the story of Ramza, a young man who battled relentlessly against a rigid class system. It was the story of Delita, who aimed to exploit the ensuing chaos and despair for his own social ascent. It was a tale of intertwined fate, where friendship and betrayal are closely linked.

"And now, in 2025—a time when inequality and division remain deeply embedded in our world—I offer this story once more. The power to resist lies in your hands."

The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster includes two editions: the classic original, featuring the War of the Lions translation, and a fully revitalized version. The new version boasts complete voice acting, a redesigned interface, "significant story additions and adjustments," and enhanced visuals. It launches for PS5 and PS5 on September 30, 2025.
