The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken a significant step forward with the announcement that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will pen the screenplay. Known for their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein bring their successful writing and directing experience to this new adaptation of Hasbro's iconic board game.
The film is set to be produced by Margot Robbie through her production company, LuckyChap, adding another high-profile name to the project. Daley and Goldstein's recent projects include not only Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves but also their original film Mayday. They have also contributed their writing talents to major films such as The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were tapped to write the script, but the project did not materialize. Another attempt in 2015 saw Lionsgate and Hasbro collaborating on a script by Andrew Niccol, followed by news in 2019 that Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be involved. However, none of these efforts came to fruition.
The current push for a Monopoly movie gained momentum with Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, sparking renewed interest and efforts. With Daley and Goldstein now on board, fans of the classic board game can hope that this version will finally "pass Go" and make it to the theaters.
