Netflix has officially announced the end of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the conclusion of a brief yet intriguing venture into narrative gaming. Despite the games garnering a solid player base, the decision to cancel the series might come as a surprise to many fans. Let's dive into the details to understand why Netflix pulled the plug on Netflix Stories.
According to Variety, this move is part of a larger strategic shift at Netflix Games. The company is now pivoting its focus towards mobile titles, including party games, kids’ games, mainstream releases, and other interactive experiences that can be enjoyed on TV screens. This shift suggests a new direction for Netflix Games, aiming to diversify its gaming portfolio and cater to a broader audience.
Boss Fight Entertainment, the creative force behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue their collaboration with Netflix on other projects, notably including the highly anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed. This indicates that while one door closes, another exciting opportunity opens for the studio.
Is Netflix Stories Shutting Down?
Despite facing some criticism, Netflix Stories consistently held its ground among the top-played games on Netflix. Recent data shows it ranking fourth in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which is based on playtime rather than downloads. This suggests that the games were indeed popular among players.
As for the future of the series, the last interactive title to be released under the Netflix Stories banner will be Love Is Blind: NYC. Following its completion, no new titles will be developed. Interestingly, this announcement came shortly after the Netflix Stories app began teasing its next game, The Love Contract, which was slated for an April 8th release. Unlike previous games that were adaptations of Netflix IPs, The Love Contract was to be an original story centered around an actress navigating a complex web of Hollywood fame, scandal, and faux romance. Unfortunately, this game has now been canceled.
Although new developments are halted, existing Netflix Stories games will remain accessible. Fans can still enjoy titles such as Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels such as those for Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been canceled.
That's the full scoop on the cancellation of Netflix Stories! If you're a fan of Netflix shows and enjoyed the interactive gaming experience, you can still find these games on the Google Play Store.
