Team Ninja unveiled Nioh 3 during Sony's State of Play event in June 2025.
The first trailer showcased an early 2026 launch for the action RPG sequel, introducing open-world exploration and dual Ninja and Samurai combat styles. A demo is available now.
Here's the official summary from the PlayStation Blog:
In Nioh 3, you play as a young warrior destined to become the next Shogun, driven to confront yokai in a gripping tale. Details on his motivations are yet to come, but players can now engage in combat using two distinct styles: Samurai and Ninja.
The Samurai style builds on the intense, close-quarters combat of past Nioh games, with new mechanics like Arts Proficiency to boost martial arts power and Deflect for precise blocking of enemy attacks, creating thrilling, high-stakes battles.
The Ninja style focuses on agility, with swift dodges and aerial maneuvers. Players can leverage “Ninjitsu” techniques like Mist, which creates a decoy after an attack, and Evade for narrowly dodging strikes, enabling devastating, fast-paced assaults from unexpected angles.
Switch between Samurai and Ninja styles on the fly to adapt to enemies and environments. Some may prefer blending both for dynamic combat, while others stick to one style based on the challenge. Face the fiercest foes yet in the style that suits you best.
Beyond new combat options, Nioh 3 introduces open fields for greater exploration, blending the series' signature tension with fresh encounters. Battle formidable yokai, uncover secrets in eerie villages, and tackle the grueling challenges of The Crucible in a cursed kingdom teeming with danger.
At IGN, we’re huge Nioh fans. We scored the original Nioh a 9.6/10, praising its “unforgettable adventure fueled by a fierce combat system balancing style and strategy.” Nioh 2 earned a 9/10 for its “stellar combat and rewarding difficulty,” despite its complex systems. The Nioh series has been quiet since Nioh 2’s 2020 release, while Team Ninja stayed active with titles like Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Rise of the Rōnin, and the upcoming Ninja Gaiden 4.
