The Burning Monolith: Path of Exile 2's Endgame Challenge

The Burning Monolith, a unique map location in Path of Exile 2's Atlas of Worlds, presents a formidable endgame challenge akin to the Realmgate. Its accessibility, however, is far from straightforward.

Accessing the Burning Monolith requires three Crisis Fragments, each obtained by conquering a Citadel – exceptionally rare and challenging map nodes within the Atlas.

Unlocking the Arbiter of Ash

The Burning Monolith serves as the arena for the game's most powerful pinnacle boss, the Arbiter of Ash. Attempting to activate the Monolith's door initiates "The Pinnacle of Flame" quest, comprising three sub-quests: Ezomyte Infiltration (Iron Citadel), Faridun Foray (Copper Citadel), and Vaal Incursion (Stone Citadel). Successfully completing these Citadels yields the three essential Crisis Fragments. Combine these fragments at the Monolith's altar to unlock the Arbiter of Ash encounter. Ensure your character build is optimized before engaging this incredibly powerful boss with its devastating attacks and immense health pool.

The Citadel Hunt: A Test of Patience

Path of Exile 2 features three Citadels – Iron, Copper, and Stone – each guarded by a unique boss and rewarding a corresponding Crisis Fragment. The primary difficulty lies in their elusive nature.

Citadels are one-time attempts. Their locations are randomly generated for each player's Atlas, defying predictable patterns. Community observations suggest some strategies, but these remain unconfirmed:

  1. Directional Progression: Choose a direction on the Atlas and systematically explore until a Citadel is discovered. Utilize Towers for a broader map overview.
  2. Corruption Tracking: Focus on map nodes exhibiting corruption, usually found at the Atlas's edges. Clear these nodes, unlock nearby Towers, and repeat. This can be combined with the first strategy.
  3. Clustered Appearance: Anecdotal evidence suggests Citadels tend to appear in groups. Finding one might indicate the proximity of others.

Citadel hunting is a time-intensive endgame activity, best undertaken with a fully optimized build and considerable boss-fighting experience.

Alternatively, Crisis Fragments can be acquired through in-game trading websites or the Currency Exchange, though their rarity often commands a high price. This might be a worthwhile investment to avoid the lengthy Citadel hunt.
