DC Studios boss James Gunn has exciting news for fans, confirming that Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere on Max on August 21. Gunn shared his enthusiasm on Twitter, describing the season premiere as “one of my favorite things ever.” Alongside this announcement, he released a tantalizing snippet of new footage featuring John Cena in action. In the clip, Cena's character, Peacemaker, is seen smirking at the camera amidst a backdrop of flames, with someone declaring him “a superhero now.”
Gunn's tweet read, "Counting the days until Peace on Earth. I just finished the DI & Mix on the Season Premiere yesterday and wow it’s one of my favorite things ever. DC Studios’ #Peacemaker Season 2 coming soon only on @StreamOnMax August 21."
Peacemaker Season 2 follows hot on the heels of the July 11 release of Superman, marking the beginning of Gunn's rebooted DCU. This makes Peacemaker the third entry in the new DCU, following the Creature Commandos TV series released last year and the upcoming Superman film.
Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran are steering the DCU away from the critically maligned DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which included films like Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Man of Steel. Despite this shift, certain elements from the old universe will carry over. Peacemaker is a prime example, transitioning from the DCEU to the new DCU with its second season.
Gunn has previously mentioned that "many strands will remain consistent as far as Peacemaker's story goes," though specifics on what will transition from the DCEU to the DCU remain under wraps. He has confirmed that the entire Team Peacemaker will return, with the same cast including John Cena as Peacemaker, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo.
Additionally, Gunn has stated that Peacemaker Season 2 will take place after the events of Creature Commandos and Superman, with the latter's storyline even impacting Peacemaker's journey.
With these updates, fans are eagerly anticipating how the new season will unfold within the evolving DCU narrative.
