Astro Bot Success Inspires PlayStation to Focus More on Family Friendly Games

Sony's plans to expand into the family genre are driven by the remarkable success of Astro Bot. Since its launch in September 2024, Astro Bot has not only sold over 1.5 million copies but also clinched the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024. This triumph has evidently influenced PlayStation's strategy, encouraging them to delve deeper into family-friendly gaming.

The phenomenal performance of Astro Bot, which also won in four categories at The Game Awards 2024, including Best Family Game, has been a significant catalyst for PlayStation's renewed focus on family-oriented titles. During the Sony Q3 Earnings Announcement on February 13, 2025, Sony President, CEO, and CFO Hiroki Totoki praised Astro Bot's achievements and outlined the company's future plans. He emphasized the strategic importance of expanding into family and live service games, citing the success of Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, which won Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer Game.

Totoki stated, "The fact that titles in genres we are aiming to expand in the future, including titles for families and live service games, have received these awards is a major stride toward our building a broader title portfolio."

Family Genre Titles Under PlayStation

Historically, PlayStation has offered a variety of family-friendly games, though recent years have seen less activity in this area. Notable franchises like Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, and Jak and Daxter haven't seen new releases in over a decade. Meanwhile, iconic PlayStation series such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon have transitioned to Xbox ownership. Currently, Ratchet & Clank and Little Big Planet stand as the primary family genre titles PlayStation has focused on recently, with Astro Bot being the latest addition.

In a December 2024 interview with Famitsu, PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst underscored Astro Bot's significance to Sony. He remarked, "Astro is very, very important to PlayStation," and praised the game for its substantial impact, stating, "It’s remarkable that a very small team is able to deliver a game that is so big, it’s really become a great game in itself, and it’s become a celebration of everything PlayStation at this point."

Possibility Of Legacy IPs Returning

Astro Bot has successfully revived interest in "dormant IPs" by featuring multiple PlayStation titles. Hulst has highlighted the value of PlayStation's extensive IP portfolio, noting, "Our extensive IP portfolio is an important asset for PlayStation, and as part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, we continually explore opportunities to leverage our legacy IP as well as develop new franchises."

The inclusion of Ape Escape monkeys in the recent Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater trailer, reminiscent of the original Snake vs. Monkey mini-game, along with the positive reception of Sly Cooper on PlayStation Plus’ Classics Catalog, suggests a potential resurgence of these classic titles. Although no official announcements have been made, these developments hint at PlayStation's interest in revisiting their family genre legacy IPs.
