A recent PlayStation job posting confirms Sony has launched a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This undisclosed team marks the 20th studio under PlayStation’s first-party banner and is focused on creating a prominent AAA title for PS5.
PlayStation’s first-party studios are celebrated as industry leaders, sparking excitement around their upcoming projects. Fans eagerly await updates on future titles from studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, and others. In recent years, PlayStation has bolstered its first-party lineup by acquiring trusted partners such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite. Now, a mysterious new studio has joined the fold, capturing fans’ attention.
Located in Los Angeles, California, this unnamed PlayStation first-party studio is crafting a “trailblazing” original AAA title. The news surfaced through a job listing for a Senior Producer, which explicitly mentions a “newly-formed AAA studio” in the city. Speculation abounds regarding the studio’s origins, with one theory pointing to a spin-off team from Bungie working on the Gummybears incubation project. This was revealed during Bungie’s July 2024 layoffs, where 155 staff members were set to transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment over the coming quarters.
Another strong candidate for this new AAA studio is a team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran of Call of Duty: Black Ops. Blundell previously partnered with PlayStation as co-founder of Deviation Games, where the studio was building a new AAA title for PS5. However, challenges led to Blundell’s departure from Deviation Games in 2022, and the studio closed in March 2024. Notably, in May 2024, many former Deviation Games employees were found to have joined a new PlayStation team led by Blundell.
Given the longer development timeline of Blundell’s team compared to the Bungie spin-off, it’s plausible that PlayStation’s new studio is home to the former. While the project remains a mystery, fans speculate it could be a continuation or reimagining of Deviation Games’ canceled AAA title. An official announcement from Sony may be years away, but fans are thrilled to know another PlayStation first-party game is in development.
