Sony WH1000XM5 Review by Kevin Lee
"The Sony WH-1000XM5 represents the significant upgrade we've been anticipating from Sony's flagship wireless headphones. The new design and AI enhance the noise-canceling capabilities, while the ambient listening mode delivers a splendidly natural experience. Audio quality is impeccable, whether you're listening to intricate classical music or enjoying a rocking action movie—these headphones handle it all with ease."
The previous generation, the Sony XM4, was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key improvements in noise cancellation and comfort. It features a second processor and double the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The redesigned earcups fit more snugly, creating a better seal and thus more effective passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation is notably superior to that of the XM4 and rivals any other noise-canceling headset in its price range.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 boasts a noticeably sleeker redesign with a different headband adjustment style. The band is wider for better weight distribution, and the earcup padding is now made of a luxurious synthetic leather material that's softer and more comfortable, allowing for hours of wear. One minor drawback is that the XM5 can no longer be folded inward, only swiveled, which makes it less compact.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 retains the excellent battery life of the XM4, offering over 30 hours on a single charge, even with ANC activated. It also supports fast charging via USB Type-C.
At this price, the XM5 is significantly less expensive than competitors like the Bose QuietComfort Ultra and the AirPods Max. If you're in the market for premium noise-canceling headphones, this deal is not to be missed.
