The previous generation, the Sony XM4, was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key improvements in noise cancellation and comfort. It features a second processor and double the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The redesigned earcups fit more snugly, creating a better seal and thus more effective passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation is notably superior to that of the XM4 and rivals any other noise-canceling headset in its price range.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 boasts a noticeably sleeker redesign with a different headband adjustment style. The band is wider for better weight distribution, and the earcup padding is now made of a luxurious synthetic leather material that's softer and more comfortable, allowing for hours of wear. One minor drawback is that the XM5 can no longer be folded inward, only swiveled, which makes it less compact.
