In the early stages of *Avowed*'s main quest, the Envoy finds themselves the victim of a tragic assassination. After solving their own murder mystery with the help of Kai and Marius in Paradis, you'll uncover the identity of your killer: Ygwulf, a member of the Paradisan Rebels who oppose Aedyr's presence in the area. As the Envoy of the emperor, you become a prime target for their cause.
Tracking down Ygwulf leads you to an underground hideout where you'll need to clear out numerous enemies and navigate platforming challenges. Make sure to come prepared with plenty of Health Potions and your best gear. During your exploration, you may come across documents that reveal Ygwulf's true intentions and his remorse. Initially driven by what he believed were divine visions, Ygwulf's perspective shifts upon realizing his mistake, and he expresses regret when you confront him.
How Ygwulf Makes a Case For His Freedom
Ygwulf's remorse and willingness to face justice present a compelling case for his freedom. Even without finding the documents, he will confess his misguided actions and his regret when you meet him at the end of the quest. This moment gives you the choice between mercy and vengeance.
What Happens If You Spare Ygwulf or He Turns Himself In? Answered
If you decide to have Ygwulf turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote, it's a grim fate as he will face the wrath of the brutal Inquisitor Lödwyn, likely leading to a painful death. This option yields fewer rewards compared to sparing him or defeating him in combat. Choosing to spare Ygwulf outright grants you 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra, which can be helpful, though not life-changing. However, even if you spare him, Ygwulf's fate is sealed, and he will meet his end later in the story.
Here’s Why You Should Kill Ygwulf in Avowed
Given that Ygwulf's fate is inevitable death, opting to attack him during your confrontation is the most beneficial choice. This leads to a boss fight that serves as excellent practice for future encounters in *Avowed*. Moreover, defeating Ygwulf grants you the best loot among the options, including currency, Adra, and his unique armor set, Blackwing. This armor not only looks impressive but also offers significant stealth advantages, such as a +30% damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% movement speed increase when crouching.
Does Ygwulf’s Fate Affect the Story in Avowed? SPOILER WARNING
Despite encountering Ygwulf early in the game, his fate does have a minor impact on the ending of *Avowed*. After the final gameplay section, the game's conclusion features art and narration that highlight how your decisions affect the world of Eora in the Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to bring peace and unity, Ygwulf's death will always occur, radicalizing the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring their continued violent resistance against your efforts post-credits.
