Mojang Rules Out Minecraft 2: 'Do You Think We’re Going to Have an Earth 2?'

Minecraft, the iconic survival-crafting game, marked its 15th anniversary last year. Despite reaching its teenage years, Mojang, the game's developer, has firmly ruled out the idea of replacing it with a sequel. During a visit to the Stockholm studio, IGN posed the question of whether the best-selling game of all time would see a sequel. Ingela Garneij, the executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, responded with a clear and humorous statement: "Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2."

While a sequel, dubbed Minecraft 2.0, is not in the works, the game is far from stagnant. Mojang has ambitious plans to extend Minecraft's lifespan significantly, aiming to double its current age. Ingela Garneij elaborated on this vision, saying, "We've existed for 15 years. We want to exist at least 15 years more so we actually, Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I, we work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game for what can we do beyond that."

Mojang's strategy involves building upon the game's robust foundations, introducing innovative ideas while maintaining its core essence. However, Garneij acknowledged the challenges posed by the game's aging technology. "I think the age of the game is a challenge," she noted. "It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast. So I would say the technology and our age [are our biggest challenges]."

Despite these technical hurdles, Minecraft remains a global phenomenon, showing no signs of waning popularity. Mojang has no plans to shift the game to a free-to-play model or incorporate generative AI technology. Fans should not anticipate a Minecraft 2 anytime soon, as Garneij humorously put it, "Not on this Earth, anyway."
