Elder Scrolls Online unveils a highly anticipated subclass system, fulfilling years of fan requests. Discover how it works and what’s next for the game.
Elder Scrolls Online 2025 Updates Unveiled
Thousands of Skill Line Combinations
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is rolling out major updates, as announced during the ESO Direct 2025 on April 10. The standout feature is the introduction of subclasses, long requested by the community.
Previously, new skill trees forced players to restart characters to access fresh content, a frustration in the MMO space. Now, subclasses let players blend skill lines without starting over.
Upon reaching level 50, players can keep one skill line from their base class and swap two others from any of the six available classes, unlocking over 3,000 unique combinations to tailor their playstyle.
Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the feature, noting extensive testing ensures balance, even with expected power level increases. He stated the team is “comfortable with the current balance.”
Seasons of the Worm Cult Arrives
ZeniMax Online is shifting to a seasonal content model, allowing more experimental releases, according to Studio Director Matt Firor. This approach aims to diversify gameplay and address player feedback more dynamically.
Firor explained, “We’re committed to compelling stories while introducing fresh ideas and systems, with a new release cadence that expands our creative scope and variety.”
The new chapter, Seasons of the Worm Cult, continues the Molag Bal storyline from a decade ago. Set in the new Isle of Solstice zone, players will confront the return of the Worm Cult.
Producer Susan Kath noted that while this season spans most of 2025, future seasons will last three to six months. ZeniMax also plans “remix” seasons to revisit past storylines, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed season teased for the future.
