ESA on Trump Tariffs: 'More Than Just Switch 2'

Apr 22,2025 Author: Peyton

The past 48 hours have been a whirlwind for both economic enthusiasts and Nintendo fans. On Wednesday, the gaming community was hit with the news that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 would retail at a steep $450 in the United States. Analysts attribute this high price to a combination of anticipated tariffs, inflation, competition, and rising component costs.

The situation escalated quickly when, last night, the Trump Administration announced sweeping 10% tariffs on virtually every country, with significantly higher tariffs imposed on nations like China, the EU, Japan, Vietnam, Canada, Mexico, and many others. In a swift response, China announced a 34% reciprocal tariff on all U.S. goods this morning. Amidst this global trade tension, Nintendo decided to postpone pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. to reassess the impact of these tariffs on their plans.

This unprecedented scenario has left everyone, from industry insiders to the general public, scrambling to understand its full implications. Just 30 minutes before Nintendo's surprising pre-order announcement, I had the opportunity to speak with Aubrey Quinn, a spokesperson for the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), about the broader impact of these tariffs on the gaming industry.

The ESA, like many others, is still grappling with the potential outcomes of these developments. Quinn mentioned that while they anticipated some form of tariffs due to past actions and campaign rhetoric from the Trump Administration, the specifics and the scale of the retaliation from countries like China were unforeseen. The ESA remains cautious, recognizing that the current announcements might not mark the end of the story.

However, the ESA is clear on one point: these tariffs will negatively affect the video game industry. Quinn expressed concern over the detrimental impact on both the industry and the millions of Americans who enjoy gaming. "We really are, at this point, just watching and trying not to have knee-jerk reactions, because we don't think that what President Trump announced this week is the end of the story, but what was announced this week and the tariffs as outlined, we do expect these tariffs will have a real and detrimental impact on the industry and the hundreds of millions of Americans who love to play games," she stated. The ESA is focused on collaborating with the administration and elected officials to find solutions that protect U.S. industries, businesses, and gamers.

Quinn highlighted that the impact of tariffs extends beyond just the pricing of gaming systems. "It's hard to imagine a world where tariffs like these don’t impact pricing," she noted, emphasizing that consumer spending and, consequently, company revenues would also be affected. This ripple effect could influence job security, investment in research and development, and the evolution of future consoles. "The entire consumer ecosystem is connected," she concluded.

In response to the situation, the ESA has been proactive, albeit facing challenges due to the recent changes in the Trump Administration. With many new appointees and a short time in office, establishing effective communication has been difficult. Nonetheless, Quinn assured that the ESA is identifying key contacts and working to forge connections to highlight the potential impacts on businesses and consumers within the U.S.

The ESA has already joined forces with other trade associations to voice their concerns to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and is seeking meetings with legislators and administration members. When asked if these efforts are yielding results, Quinn confirmed that discussions are taking place at various levels of government, though not yet at the highest echelons. She stressed that the issue transcends the video game industry, affecting a wide range of consumer products.

For concerned consumers, Quinn suggested reaching out to their representatives through letters, calls, emails, or social media to express their concerns. "I think the more members of government, elected officials, and their staff who hear that their constituents are concerned, the more likely we are to be heard and to potentially make an impact," she advised.

Shortly after our conversation, Nintendo announced the postponement of Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders due to the tariffs. When asked for further comments on this specific action, Quinn reiterated that the ESA does not comment on decisions made by individual companies. However, she acknowledged the unfortunate timing of the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal coinciding with the tariff announcements, emphasizing that the impact of these tariffs would be felt across the entire gaming industry, not just on one console. "This is going to have an impact... This is company-agnostic, this is an entire industry," she concluded, underscoring the broad-reaching effects of the current trade policies.
