Evil Dead: The Game, the beloved asymmetric multiplayer game inspired by the iconic action horror franchise, has been removed from digital storefronts by its publisher. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms, the game garnered an impressive 8/10 in IGN's review, which praised its thrilling cat-and-mouse gameplay despite some rough edges reminiscent of the horror/comedies it was based on.
Despite the release of a Game of the Year Edition a year after its initial launch, the game struggled to maintain player engagement. The planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled in September 2023, and content development ceased. Now, three years after its debut, Evil Dead: The Game is no longer available for purchase. However, existing owners can breathe a sigh of relief as the servers will remain active, allowing them to continue enjoying the game.
Saber Interactive, both the developer and publisher, announced the delisting on the game's Steam page, stating:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has sparked a wave of negative reviews on Steam, with many players expressing disappointment and concern that the game is now effectively "dead." Despite this, the game maintains a 'mixed' user review rating. One player, with over 380 hours logged, left a positive review, acknowledging the end but appreciating the fun times had: "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, known for their work on last year's hit Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to expand its portfolio with several licensed movie games in development, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game, Turok: Origins, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.
