Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Rank-Inclusive Character Bans
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players. The mass ban, intended to target cheaters, inadvertently flagged numerous non-Windows users employing compatibility layers like those used on macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck.

The incident, which occurred on January 3rd, saw players utilizing compatibility software mistakenly identified as cheaters. NetEase has since reversed the bans and apologized for the inconvenience. They encouraged players to report actual cheating behavior and utilize in-game or Discord support for wrongful ban appeals. The reliance on compatibility layers, particularly Proton for SteamOS, has been highlighted as a recurring source of false positives with anti-cheat systems.

Separately, a community debate has emerged regarding the implementation of character bans. Currently, this feature—allowing players to remove specific characters from selection—is only available in Diamond rank and above. Players in lower ranks express frustration, arguing that the lack of character bans creates unbalanced gameplay and limits strategic diversity. Reddit discussions highlight the disparity, with players noting that the ban system, viewed as a form of soft balancing, enhances the experience for higher-ranked players while leaving lower ranks at a disadvantage.

The call for rank-inclusive character bans aims to introduce newer players to the mechanic, encourage more varied team compositions, and ultimately create a more balanced and enjoyable experience across all skill levels. NetEase's response to this ongoing player feedback remains pending.
