Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart recently provided an update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, revealing that progress on both titles is proceeding smoothly, despite past challenges.
In a YouTube interview with Limit Break Network, Urquhart confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 development is progressing well. He praised the dedicated team, many of whom worked on the original game, expressing his confidence in their ability to deliver a high-quality sequel.
The CEO acknowledged the hurdles the studio faced, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and the period following Microsoft's acquisition. Simultaneous development of multiple titles, including Grounded and Pentiment, significantly taxed the team's resources. Urquhart candidly admitted a period of strained development, even mentioning internal discussions about potentially halting The Outer Worlds 2 to focus on Avowed. However, Obsidian ultimately chose to persevere with all projects.
Urquhart recounted the challenges of navigating acquisition, the pandemic, and the simultaneous development of Outer Worlds, its DLC, Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, Grounded, and Pentiment. He emphasized that despite these difficulties, Grounded and Pentiment were successfully released to critical acclaim, Avowed is shaping up impressively, and The Outer Worlds 2 is looking "incredible." While specific gameplay details remain undisclosed, the delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.
Since its 2021 announcement, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates, leading to speculation about potential delays. Urquhart acknowledged this possibility but reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering exceptional games. He admitted that initial timelines might not be met, but assured fans that both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are on track for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
