Rainbow Six Siege X kicks off its Closed Beta, unveiling the innovative 6v6 Dual Front game mode. Discover details about this new mode and the beta test experience.
Ubisoft revealed on their official site that the Rainbow Six Siege X (R6 Siege X) Closed Beta will run from March 13 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET / 8 PM CET, immediately following the R6 Siege X Showcase, until March 19 at the same times.
Players can secure access to the R6 Siege X Closed Beta by tuning into the R6 Siege X Showcase on the official Rainbow 6 Twitch channel or select Content Creators’ Twitch streams to earn Closed Beta Twitch drops. The beta features the Dual Front mode and is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Currently, some players are facing issues with delayed emails containing access codes for the R6 Siege X Closed Beta. On March 14, Ubisoft Support addressed this on Twitter (X), stating they are working to resolve the issue and deliver codes promptly.
R6 Siege X is not a standalone title but a significant update, enhancing Siege with advanced graphics and technical improvements.
Ubisoft debuted Dual Front, a dynamic 6v6 mode that, per their website, offers “core gameplay upgrades, including visual enhancements, an audio overhaul, improved rappelling, and enhanced player protection systems, all accessible for free to deliver Siege’s unique tactical action.”
Set on the new District map, Dual Front pits two teams of six Operators against each other, simultaneously attacking enemy sectors and defending their own. This marks the first time R6 features both roles concurrently, “unlocking new gadget synergies and creative strategies.”
The classic Siege mode, now called “Core Siege” in the main menu, remains intact with five revamped maps—Clubhouse, Chalet, Border, Bank, and Kafe—featuring doubled texture resolution, optional 4K textures on PC, and improved destructible materials. While only five maps are updated now, more will follow in future seasons, with three added each time.
After a decade, Siege will transition to free-to-play, aligning with industry trends. Unlike 2015, when paid multiplayer titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 dominated, live-service games now thrive.
At the R6 Siege X Showcase in Atlanta on March 13, Siege Game Director Alexander Karpazis told PC Gamer the team aims to attract new players. “We want friends to invite others to try Siege and experience what makes it unique,” he said, emphasizing that playing with friends enhances the experience.
Free access includes Unranked, Quick Play, and Dual Front modes. However, Ranked mode and Siege Cup require premium access. In a 2020 PC Gamer interview, former director Leroy Athanassoff noted that the initial pay-to-play model deterred smurfs and cheaters. Karpazis added, “The paywall for Ranked and Siege Cup ensures commitment, balancing new player access with a competitive space for veterans.”
Karpazis confirmed that a Siege 2 was never considered, despite the game’s 10-year milestone. Unlike competitors like Overwatch 2 or Counter-Strike 2, R6 Siege focuses on evolving the original.
“Siege 2 was never an option,” Karpazis said. “Many live-service games hit this 10-year mark, and we chose what’s right for Siege and its players.” He noted that Siege X, developed alongside seasonal updates for three years, aims to sustain the game for another decade. “Siege X is about bold, meaningful changes, showing we’re committed for another 10 years while honoring our community,” he added.
Karpazis emphasized the community’s role, stating, “A live-service game doesn’t reach 10 years without its dedicated players.”
