Take-Two CEO on GTA 6 Delay: 'Painful but Necessary for Creative Vision'

May 16,2025 Author: Nicholas

In February, I had the chance to speak with Strauss Zelnick, the head of Take-Two Interactive, about the anticipated release window for GTA 6, which was then set for fall 2025. At that time, Zelnick expressed strong confidence, stating he felt "really good about it." However, just three months later, GTA 6's release was postponed to May 26, 2026, a shift that perhaps wasn't entirely unexpected.

Curious about what had changed in those few months, I revisited the topic with Zelnick during a new interview that coincided with the release of Take-Two's latest financial results. He explained that as GTA 6 neared its completion, the necessity for additional refinement became apparent. "As we get closer to completion of a title that's seeking perfection, the needs or lack thereof, for continued polish become clear," Zelnick noted. He emphasized that with a slight extension, Rockstar Games would have the opportunity to fully realize their creative vision without any compromises. "In this case, there was an opportunity with a small amount of incremental time, we thought, to make sure Rockstar Games achieves its creative vision with no limitations. And I supported, of course, that approach," he added.

The delay of GTA 6 pushes its launch outside of Take-Two's current fiscal year, impacting the company's short-term financial projections. Despite this, Zelnick remains optimistic about the company's future, highlighting upcoming titles such as Gearbox's Borderlands 4, Hangar 13's Mafia: The Old Country, and new entries in the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series. "I feel really good about how Fiscal 26 looks sitting here today," he remarked. "And while of course, delays pain me — how could they not? — the most important thing to do is to support your teams in their search for perfection."

Returning to the topic of GTA 6's release, I posed the same question to Zelnick as I did in February: How confident are you that Rockstar will meet the new release date of May 26, 2026? This time, Zelnick's response was even more assertive: "I think historically when we set a specific date, generally speaking, we've been very good about reaching it." This statement subtly suggests a firm commitment to the new release date, implying that further delays are highly unlikely.

The release of GTA 6 Trailer 2 and the accompanying information from Rockstar has fueled a frenzy of speculation among fans about what the game will offer. Some enthusiasts are even speculating that Liberty City might feature in GTA 6, either at launch or as part of post-launch downloadable content (DLC).

As we eagerly await more details, there's a wealth of information already available on GTA 6. This includes comprehensive breakdowns of all the details uncovered so far, a collection of 70 brand new screenshots, and expert analyses on how GTA 6 will perform on the PS5 Pro.
