Unveiling 5 New Tarkir Cards: Dragonstorm in Magic: The Gathering

May 04,2025 Author: Eleanor

While Magic: The Gathering's high-profile collaborations with Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have been grabbing headlines, the upcoming set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, is set to bring fans back to the beloved plane of Tarkir. This eagerly anticipated expansion is already available for preorder on Amazon, and we're excited to offer an exclusive sneak peek at five cards that are likely to dominate draft tables next month. Flip through the gallery below to see all five cards and continue reading for insights from Wizards of the Coast on their design and the overall vision for the set.

Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm

6 ImagesThese five cards form a "cycle," each sharing common design elements across Magic's colors. They are all cost-effective, common-rarity creatures with an ability linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, as well as a feature that enables you to convert mana into a color used by that clan.

"Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing across all rarities," explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. "Our goal was to ensure that many decks could access mana fixing, so we developed several designs to address this. These creatures uniquely allow you to play to the board while also developing your mana—a dual advantage over designs like tapped lands, which only generate mana and can set you back in gameplay."

"We wanted to showcase how these clans have evolved since players last saw them. The Jeskai's passionate, action-oriented monks, the Temur's use of Whispers, the Sultai's Nagas as jungle protectors and avengers, the Mardu's military prowess including support roles and the diverse forms of dragons, and the Abzan clerics working to regrow their lost kin trees."

PlaySome recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting familiar planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its straightforward return to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the value of such feedback but notes that "the top-level pitch for Tarkir was established well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged."

"We aimed to fuse Dragons and Clans in a unique way, unseen before on Tarkir. The Dragonstorms, a defining feature of the plane, were central to our approach for this return. Lauren and I felt the pressure to get it right from the start. Our goal was to authentically expand the next chapter of this cherished plane."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with the set set to launch in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4. Continue reading for the full interview with Wizards of the Coast's Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl.
