Their previous work on the cult classic Severance: Blade of Darkness, released in 2001, is particularly noteworthy. Severance has been a significant source of inspiration for the team behind Blades of Fire.

In crafting their new game, MercurySteam also looked to modern action-adventure titles for inspiration. The cinematic combat and richly detailed world of the God of War reboot by Santa Monica Studio served as a key influence.
