"Oblivion Remastered Update Causes Visual Glitches; Bethesda Working on Fix"

May 07,2025 Author: Riley

PC players of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered encountered unexpected issues following a surprise update released today, but Bethesda has assured fans that a solution is on the horizon.

Upon launching their games, players discovered that Virtuos' expansive re-release had received an unannounced update. Without any accompanying patch notes or explanation of the update's purpose, many continued playing as usual. However, a significant number of users soon realized that the first update for Oblivion Remastered was causing more harm than good.

One Reddit user noted, "Can't change the upscaling methods anymore. It's set to 'off' and while the arrows are clickable nothing happens. So I closed the game, disabled fluid motion in the NVidia app (was testing something before the patch came) and started the game again. Loading times for my save are long again and still can't change upscaling settings lol. Now I am stuck with 40-60 fps in high settings with a 5800X3D and a 5080. Nice patch :D"

While some players reported no significant changes in performance, others faced new challenges with low frame rates. Many also found that the upscaling settings were inaccessible, leading to considerable visual problems as Oblivion Remastered’s first weekend approached.

Are you playing Oblivion for the first time with Remastered, or did you play the original first?

In response to the outcry, Bethesda issued a statement on its official support page. The post clarified that the update was intended to include "a few backend tweaks and nothing directly impacting gameplay." Unfortunately, the update has primarily affected those playing through the Microsoft Store, particularly with their upscaling and anti-aliasing options.

Bethesda further explained, "Any graphic settings adjusted prior to the Microsoft Store hotfix are still enabled and function normally. However, you will temporarily be unable to adjust those settings due to the issue with the settings UI. The team is taking a look and working out a resolution, we will share more info as soon as we can."

Currently, there's no definitive timeline for when a fix for this unexpected hotfix will be available. Meanwhile, players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S can continue enjoying the game without issues.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was re-released this week for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X | S. For further insights into Bethesda’s and Virtuos' approach to remastering the game, including their intention to preserve the original's charm, and why it continues to captivate players, you can explore why Bethesda and Virtuos aimed to maintain the jank of the original game and why some players still love it all these years later.
