Price Increases Effective July 10th (New Subscribers) and September 12th (Existing Subscribers)
The updated pricing structure, effective July 10th, 2024, for new subscribers and September 12th, 2024, for existing subscribers, is as follows:
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Increases from $16.99 to $19.99 per month. This premium tier includes PC Game Pass, Day One games, a vast game library, online multiplayer, and cloud gaming.
- PC Game Pass: Rises from $9.99 to $11.99 per month, retaining access to Day One releases, member discounts, a comprehensive PC game catalog, and EA Play.
- Game Pass Core: Annual price increases to $74.99 from $59.99 (monthly price remains at $9.99).
- Game Pass for Console: Will be discontinued for new subscribers starting July 10th, 2024. Existing subscribers can maintain access as long as their subscription remains active. After September 18th, 2024, the maximum stackable subscription time will be limited to 13 months.
Introducing Xbox Game Pass Standard
A new tier, Xbox Game Pass Standard, priced at $14.99 per month, is also being introduced. This tier offers access to a back catalog of games and online multiplayer but excludes Day One game releases and cloud gaming. Further details regarding its launch date and game availability are forthcoming.
Microsoft's Expanding Game Pass Vision
Microsoft emphasizes its commitment to offering players diverse choices in how they experience games, citing the various price points and subscription options as evidence. Statements from Xbox CEO Phil Spencer and CFO Tim Stuart highlight the high-margin nature of Game Pass, fueling Microsoft's investment in this area. The recent marketing campaign showcasing Game Pass on Amazon Fire Sticks further underscores the company's focus on expanding its reach beyond traditional Xbox consoles.
Hardware Remains a Key Component
Despite the expansion of Game Pass, Microsoft has confirmed its continued commitment to hardware. CEO Satya Nadella has explicitly stated that they are not abandoning their hardware business and see potential for further growth in this area. Microsoft has also reiterated its commitment to physical game releases, addressing concerns about a potential all-digital future. While acknowledging challenges related to the manufacturing of disc drives, Xbox maintains that a physical game offering is a strategic priority.
