Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch February 14th. This new entry introduces significant changes, particularly to its parkour mechanics and protagonist design.

A Refined Parkour Experience:

The game's parkour system has undergone a major overhaul. Instead of free-climbing any surface, players will navigate designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable areas remain accessible, though strategic route-finding will be key. This focused design allows for more controlled level design, optimizing flow and challenge.

Seamless ledge dismounts are another notable addition. Players can now gracefully dismount from ledges with stylish flips, enhancing the fluidity of movement. A new prone position also allows for diving during sprints, adding another layer to traversal options.

Dual Protagonists, Diverse Playstyles:

Shadows features two playable characters: the stealthy shinobi, Naoe, and the powerful samurai, Yasuke. Naoe excels in silent infiltration and vertical traversal, utilizing the parkour system to its fullest. Yasuke, on the other hand, is a force in open combat but lacks climbing abilities. This dual-protagonist approach aims to satisfy both stealth purists and fans of the more RPG-focused combat found in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

Ubisoft's Vision:

Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois explains that the revised parkour system provides more control over level design, ensuring a balanced experience for both protagonists. While some surfaces may require a more considered approach, the majority remain climbable, especially with the aid of the grappling hook.

Release and Competition:

Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition in a busy February release window, including titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. The coming weeks will undoubtedly reveal more about this highly anticipated title.
