Dead by Daylight's The Nightmare Gets a Major Rework
Freddy Krueger, or The Nightmare, in Dead by Daylight is receiving a significant rework in a future patch, designed to boost his competitiveness and better reflect his iconic horror persona. The changes focus on increased flexibility and unique interactions with Survivors.
Currently considered one of the weaker Killers, Freddy's existing power set – Dream Snares and Dream Pallets – requires highly specialized builds to be effective. Behaviour Interactive's January 2025 Developer Update outlines substantial improvements addressing these shortcomings.
The core change introduces the ability to seamlessly switch between Dream Snares and Dream Pallets. This dynamic shift enhances Freddy's tactical options. Furthermore, both powers are receiving significant updates:
-
Dream Snares: These will now travel at 12 m/s, traversing walls and stairs (but not ledges), with a 5-second cooldown. Their effect varies depending on whether a Survivor is asleep or awake: asleep Survivors are hindered for 4 seconds, while awake Survivors receive a 30-second increase to their sleep meter.
-
Dream Pallets: These can be detonated, creating a 3-meter radius blood explosion 1.5 seconds after activation. Hitting a sleeping Survivor inflicts an injury; hitting an awake Survivor adds 60 seconds to their sleep timer.
Freddy's teleportation ability is also enhanced. He can now teleport to any generator (completed, blocked, or endgame) within the Dream World, or to any Survivor actively healing. Teleporting near a healing Survivor reveals them via Killer Instinct for the duration of the heal (with a 3-second lingering effect). This enhances his ability to disrupt healing and capitalize on Survivor locations. The teleport cooldown is reduced from 45 to 30 seconds, but cancellation is no longer possible.
Additionally, several of The Nightmare's Add-ons will be adjusted to encourage more creative loadout strategies. However, his Perks (Fire Up, Remember Me, and Blood Warden) remain unchanged, possibly to maintain design fidelity.
Key Rework Notes:
- [CHANGE] Swap between Dream Snares and Dream Pallets using the Active Ability.
- [NEW] Dream Snares move at 12 m/s (5-second cooldown), traversing walls and stairs (not ledges). Unique effects for sleeping and awake Survivors.
- [NEW] Dream Pallets explode (3-meter radius, 1.5-second delay). Different effects for sleeping and awake Survivors.
- [NEW] Teleportation to completed generators, blocked generators, endgame generators, and healing Survivors in the Dream World. Killer Instinct reveal on nearby Survivors post-teleport.
- [CHANGE] Teleport cooldown reduced to 30 seconds; cancellation removed.
- [NEW] Healing Survivors are revealed by Killer Instinct in the Dream World.
- [CHANGE] Sleeping Survivors can use any Alarm Clock to wake up.

These changes aim to make The Nightmare a more viable and engaging Killer, offering a more nuanced and terrifying gameplay experience. While the exact release date isn't specified, these mechanics are currently implemented in the Public Test Build (PTB).
