HBO Max Reverts to Original Name: Warner Bros. Discovery

Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that Max will revert to its original name, HBO Max, starting this summer.
This unexpected rebrand comes just two years after HBO Max transitioned to Max. The soon-to-be-renamed platform hosts acclaimed series like Game of Thrones, The White Lotus, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and The Penguin.
WBD revealed that its streaming division has achieved a remarkable $3 billion profitability turnaround within two years while expanding globally, gaining 22 million new subscribers in the past year alone. The company projects surpassing 150 million subscribers by late 2026.
"Our success stems from strategic reinvestment in high-performing content—HBO originals, recent blockbuster films, documentaries, select reality series, and Max exclusives—while reducing focus on less engaging genres," the company explained.
Why resurrect HBO Max? Research shows audiences associate the HBO brand with premium, distinctive content worth paying for—a critical differentiator in today's oversaturated streaming market.
"Modern viewers aren't asking for more content; they're demanding better content," WBD noted. "While competitors flood the market with volume, we've consistently delivered quality storytelling—something HBO has championed for over five decades."
"Reintroducing HBO into our streaming identity will sharpen our competitive edge and reaffirm the exceptional viewing experience we provide. This strategic shift reflects our data-driven approach to meet evolving consumer preferences."
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav commented: "Our streaming growth stems from content excellence. By reinstating HBO—the gold standard in entertainment—we're accelerating future expansion."
Streaming chief JB Perrette added: "Our focus remains on distinctive programming that resonates with adults and families—content that objectively stands apart in today's crowded landscape."
HBO and Max Content Chairman Casey Bloys concluded: "HBO Max better reflects our current offering and reinforces our commitment to delivering uniquely valuable entertainment—what we've always called 'content worth paying for.'"
