Reports indicate that nearly all third-party Nintendo Switch 2 physical games revealed in Japan so far are Game-Key Cards, with a similar pattern emerging in Western markets.
As reported by Gematsu, Japanese Switch 2 pre-orders show all third-party physical releases - except CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077 and non-Switch 2 Edition titles - utilize Game-Key Cards that require internet connectivity for full game downloads.
Ys X: Proud Nordics and No Sleep for Kaname Date are also game-key cards in Japan. And retail descriptions for Split Fiction list it as a code-in-a-box.

The Western market follows this trend, with Sega's Switch 2 releases like Sonic X Shadow Generations confirmed as Game-Key Cards through Walmart listings. Currently, only four third-party physical exceptions have been identified:
Nintendo previously disclosed that some Switch 2 game cartridges would contain download codes rather than full games, clarifying that Switch 2 Edition titles include both game data and upgrades on the cartridge.

Game-Key Cards function as physical licenses without game data, requiring downloads upon activation. Retail packaging clearly indicates these titles with front-box labeling. Examples include Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster, while flagship Nintendo titles like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza ship on full cartridges.

Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research & Insights at Niko Partners, warns this distribution model may strain eShop servers during the June launch window as players simultaneously download purchased games.
All the Switch 2 bundles come with a download code.
Mario Kart World is 24GB.
Most games come on a game key card and require a download.
The Switch 2 launches globally on the same day.
I ask you all to pray for the eShop servers on June 5.- Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) April 24, 2025
Ahmad explains the publisher rationale: "Game cards are significantly more expensive than discs (cost increases with each GB). Production ramp-up for multiple storage capacity cards takes time. Digital/lower capacity cards offer better publisher margins."
Christopher Dring of GamesIndustry.biz describes the key cards as "essentially gift-wrapping for digital purchases," noting broader industry shifts: "With fewer retailers, rising manufacturing costs, generational indifference to physical media, and sustainability concerns - all signs point in one direction."
Following April 24 pre-order sellouts, Nintendo fans have begun flooding eBay with fake Switch 2 listings to disrupt scalper activity.
